The Auld Ridge - A Gary Grant Allred Family History The Chinese were one of the first cultures to adopt the use of hereditary surnames about 5000 years ago. Obviously, we are not of Chinese decent. Surnames were not introduced into the European culture until the 10th or 11th century AD in Venice. The use gradually spread throughout Europe until surnames were used by all Europeans of all classes. There was a people living as freemen along the ridge of the hills of Wales, England who decided to designate themselves as People from the Auld Ridge. This is the origin of the name Aldridge. What does the Aldridge family have to do with the Allred family? The surname Allred is a derivative of Aldridge, which is rumored to have changed during the mid 1700's in Randolph, NC. The Gary Grant Allred family line can be traced back to the Aldridge family as far back as 1706 with William Aldridge aka William Allred. Why his name was changed is unknown at this time. Perhaps it was changed to break the ties to England after the Revolutionary War. It could be a mispronunciation or misunderstanding due to language barriers. No matter the reason, the Allred name is alive and well, rich with heritage and has become a well respected and proud name in modern times. The Gary Grant Allred family are descendents of a line of strong, dedicated and noble men. Thomas Allred, who is the son of the afore mentioned William Aldridge/Allred was born in 1730 in Randolph, NC. Thomas moved to Anderson, SC after marriage where William Allred was born in 1756. William is the father of the frequently mentioned Isaac Allred, who was born in Pendleton Country, GA on January 27, 1788. Isaac Allred is the first in the Gary Grant Allred line to accept the beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized in the year 1833. He help build the Allred Settlement near the Salt River in Monroe County, MO, which was visited by no less than Joseph Smith himself on several occasions. Isaac married Mary C. Calvert on February 14, 1811 and together they had thirteen children, including the legendary twin brothers Reddick and Reddin Allred. The youngest child born to Isaac and Mary was Sidney Rigdon Allred who was born on October 22, 1837 in Caldwell County, MO shortly following the expulsion of the Saints from Monroe. Sidney Rigdon arrived in Utah with the Allen Taylor Company in 1849 and eventually settled in Sanpete County with his loving wife Lucy Ann. Sidney and Lucy were parents to sixteen children, eight of whom died in infancy. Sidney had two great loves in his life, his wife and the Gospel. When he died suddenly in 1911, his reading glasses and a picture of his loving wife were his bookmark in the Book of Mormon he had been reading. Third child to Sidney Rigdon and Lucy Ann Allred was Calvert Lorenzo Allred, born in Spring City, Utah on May 12, 1864. Calvert Lorenzo is the only direct ancestor of the Gary Grant Allred family to practice polygamy. In 1888 he married his first wife, Gertrude "Maria" Jensen, who had come to Spring City with her family in 1880 from Tolne Hjorring, Denmark. Together they had ten children. Calvert married Gertrude's sister, Andrea Jensen in 1890 with whom he had seven more children. Calvert Lorenzo was among the first pioneers to migrate to Chihuahua, Mexico to help build up the Mormon Colonies. A large 7-room red brick house was home to Calvert and his family in one of the six beautiful colonies for 22 years before they were driven out by Pancho Villa in the revolution of 1912. After a brief stay in El Paso, Texas Calvert decided to move his family to the Gila Valley in Arizona in 1913. Two weeks after settling, Maria died of a long illness and Andrea took on the task of raising all the children. First born son to Calvert Lorenzo and Maria Allred was Calvert Alonzo Allred, born in Colonial Dublan, Chihuahua, Mexico on July 11, 1891. Calvert Alonzo spent his entire childhood and youth in the colonies of Mexico. Not having the pleasure of an education during childhood, Calvert Alonzo enrolled into an Academy of Education in Juarez, Mexico in 1910. It was at this Academy that he met Cornelia Cardon, lovingly referred to as Nelia. Calvert and Nelia were married on May 20, 1912. A month and a half after they were married, Calvert Alonzo and Nelia fled to El Paso, Texas along with the rest of the afore mentioned Allred family. After receiving word of his mother's death, Calvert moved to the Gila Valley where he and his wife settled and raised nine children. His cherished wife left his side on April 9, 1958. In 1960 he wrote, "She is waiting for me on the other side where we again will take up our life together..." Calvert Alonzo died on March 11, 1972. His last words were, "Mother wait for me". Joseph "Grant" Allred was born on August 27, 1915 and is the second born to Calvert Alonzo and Nelia Allred. Grant spent his entire life in Safford, Arizona where he was part owner of the Safford Body Shop. Grant married Ellen Leora Dameron on June 20, 1940 and together they raised six children. Like his forefather's, Grant was a hard working man who was dedicated to the support and happiness of his wife and children. While Grant was known to work hard, he did not forget to have fun with his life as well. He and Ellen loved to dance together, play sports together and had many friends whom they'd have over for games and laughter often. Grant was not afraid to show affection for his wife, whom he cherished and was a great example to his children. Grant died from complications of Alzheimer's on New Years Day, 1986. The eldest child of Grant and Ellen Allred is Gary Grant Allred who was born in Safford, Arizona on April 18, 1941. Gary spent his childhood and youth in Safford before leaving to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mexico in 1960. Upon returning from his mission he moved up to Provo, Utah to attend Brigham Young University, which is where he met his loving wife Reva Lou Carter. Gary and Reva were married on May 30, 1964. Gary and Reva spent the first few years of their marriage in Utah, and then returned to the Gila Valley to start raising their family of eight children*. Gary and Reva decided to return to Utah in 1979 and settled into the Salt Lake Valley. Both retired teachers, Gary and Reva have served as missionaries in Monterrey, Mexico for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2003-2005 and are currently serving as Area Welfare Coordinators in the South America South Area mission in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They enjoy serving, but miss spending time with their twenty-three grandchildren**. I am Misti Allred Rossell, fourth child of Gary Grant and Reva Allred. I was born on November 20, 1969 in Prescott, Arizona. I married the love of my life, Scott Allen Rossell on October 7, 1992 and currently reside in Santee, California. I am proud to present this brief history of my family to you. It has been my pleasure to read about and get to know those who made me and my family who we are today. I realize that I am part of a lineage who is not afraid of hard work and who cherishes love, life and family. I dedicate this site to the family, whom I love and to all Allred's throughout the world.
